Dr. David Marlow, Breeden Eminent Visiting Scholar in the Arts & Humanities, will discuss “Funny Talk: On the Nature of Dialect in the South and Elsewhere” at Pebble Hill on Wednesday, January 30 at 4 p.m.


In the talk, Marlow will discuss the nature of dialects, the logic and regularity of dialects, and reasons why certain dialects are celebrated while others are stigmatized. As the 2019 Breeden Eminent Visiting Scholar, Dr. Marlow is teaching a course in linguistics in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Marlow is Professor of Linguistics and Director of Service Learning & Community Engagement at University of South Carolina Upstate.


The event is free, open to the public, and will be followed by refreshments.
