Stacey Rathert, the first-place winner of the Out of the Box juried sculpture exhibition joins us this semester to give a Thursday evening public lecture shedding light on the evolution of her work, her studio practice and the conceptualization of the work they have in JCSM’s outdoor sculpture exhibition. This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Open auditorium seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is encouraged via Eventbrite.

Rathert is an artist originally from the way outs of Kansas, also known as the small farming community of Lancaster. Rathert received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science in Education in 2011 from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas. She then made an epic voyage to the south to receive her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Mississippi, Oxford, in 2015. Currently, Rathert is an instructor at the University of Mississippi in the sculpture and foundations department.

Working in a variety of scale and material, she creates whimsical objects that are embellishments of the truth, relating to personal narrative and experiences of growing up on the farm. Rathert’s artwork is also deeply rooted in process and material, pushing the limits and establishing new boundaries, especially in steel and cast iron.

Rathert’s artwork has been shown in regional, national, and international shows, in both gallery and outdoor settings. She also has a piece in the private collection of the Talsi Regional Museum in Talsi, Latvia. Rathert has had the pleasure of working with and drawing inspiration from artists such as Tobias Flores, Durant Thompson, Jillian Thompson-Springer, and Noah and Alison Kirby.
