The public is invited to a book talk Matthew Hoch, editor of So You Want to Sing Sacred Music: A Guide for Performers, on Thursday, April 27 at 4 p.m. at Pebble Hill.

So You Want to Sing Sacred Music addresses the sacred singing traditions most commonly encountered by amateur and emerging professional singers. Multiple contributors offer a broad overview of sacred singing in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Specialists address a wide range of topics, including Jewish cantorial music, Gregorian chant, post-Vatican II Catholic music, choral traditions, and contemporary Christian music. In particular, Dr. Hoch will focus on Anglican choral traditions and hymnody, building upon the foundations established in his 2015 book, Welcome to Church Music & The Hymnal 1982.

Matthew Hoch is associate professor of voice and coordinator of voice studies at Auburn University. He is the author of several books, including A Dictionary for the Modern Singer. He holds the BM from Ithaca College, MM from the Hartt School, and DMA from the New England Conservatory. Dr. Hoch is the 2016 winner of the Van L. Lawrence Fellowship, awarded jointly by the Voice Foundation and NATS. He actively performs art song, opera, chamber music, and in professional choral settings.

The event is free, open to the public, and will be followed by refreshments. Books will be available for purchase and signing. The Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities at Pebble Hill is located at 101 S. Debardeleben Street, Auburn.
