Internationally recognized mural artist Esteban del Valle presents  lecture on Sept. 13
The Department of Art & Art History in the College of Liberal Arts announces that interdisciplinary artist Esteban del Valle will present the Roslyn Brock Stern Lecture on Sept. 13, 2017, from 5 - 6 p.m. in 005 Biggin Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Esteban del Valle completed his MFA in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2009, where he received a Presidential Scholarship and the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship. His work investigates the performance of leadership, the role of the artist as a public figure, and the effects of class and privilege on institutions in the form of paintings, murals, sculpture and video art.

He has exhibited internationally, working with galleries and organizations such as Urban Nation, Berlin, Germany; Fundacion-Taller Silvano Lora, Santo Domingo; Sumter County Gallery of Art, Sumter, SC; and Superchief Gallery, New York, NY.

Esteban del Valle has been the recipient of several visual arts residencies and fellowships including the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Fine Arts Work Center, and Smack Mellon Artist Studio Program. Most recently, he completed a summer residency at Chulitna Lodge in Lake Clark, Alaska and received a fellowship from the Arts Student League in New York. Del Valle executes mural projects internationally, and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

The Department of Art & Art History in the College of Liberal Arts gratefully acknowledges the support of siblings Ginger and J. Stern who donated the funds that support this lecture series in honor of their mother, Auburn alumna Roslyn Brock Stern (BA, Education, 1959), and her commitment to the arts and education. Roslyn Brock Stern was the first art teacher in the Opelika school system, and she helped to launch and sustain several local cultural organizations, including the Opelika Historic Preservation Society, Keep Opelika Beautiful, the Delphi Study Club, and the Opelika Arts Association, today known as The Arts Association of East Alabama.
