Roger D. Launius will discuss his new book The Smithsonian History of Space Exploration: From the Ancient World to the Extraterrestrial Future on Tuesday, November 13 at 4:00 p.m. at the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities at Pebble Hill in Auburn, Alabama.


Released last month, the book is a comprehensive illustrated guide to the history of U.S. and international space exploration, both manned and unmanned. Launius examines the thousands of years that humans have endeavored to understand the universe, and he also reveals the future of space exploration, speculating on forthcoming space travel and humans' possible future as an extraterrestrial species.


Roger Launius is the former Associate Director of Collections and Curatorial Affairs at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. From 1990 to 2002, he served as chief historian of NASA. He has authored and coauthored numerous books, most recently Societal Impact of Spaceflight.


The event is free, open to the public, and will be followed by refreshments. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
