September discussion: "Why I Want Alabama to Have More Snakes"

The AU Science Cafe is a one-hour program hosted by the College of Sciences and Mathematics Office of Outreach. The monthly event provides an opportunity for the community to discuss cutting-edge scientific topics with an Auburn University scientist. The September AU Science Cafe will feature guest scientist David Steen, biological sciences faculty member and researcher with the Auburn University Museum of Natural History’s Alabama Natural Heritage Program. Steen’s talk is titled, “Why I Want Alabama to Have More Snakes.”

Steen will discuss Eastern Indigo Snake reintroduction efforts. The Eastern Indigo Snake is the largest North American snake, and it is a federally-threatened species that went extinct in Alabama sometime in the mid-20th century. Steen will talk about why the snake is important to Alabama, what it takes to raise and release hundreds of rare snakes into the wilds of south Alabama, and how scientists are figuring out if their efforts are paying off.

No scientific background is required to participate in The AU Science Cafe, and no question is too silly to ask. All are invited to attend. For more information, contact Josh King at 334-734-1182, or by email at josh.king@auburn.edu.
