Bryan Stevenson's book, Just Mercy, was selected as Auburn University's 2016-2017 Common Book. Just Mercy is Bryan Stevenson's true story of his experiences as an attorney seeking justice for those whose voices have been historically silenced; he speaks on behalf of and allows these men and women to tell their own stories - death row inmates, children sentenced as adults, minorities accused of crimes due to racial discrimination, former inmates who have difficulty overcoming barriers when returned to society, and for the families of these prisoners who desire true justice and hope for mercy. In particular, Mr. Stevenson’s memoir takes a parallel journey alongside one man, Walter McMillian, who was on death row after his wrongful conviction in 1986 of killing Ronda Morrison, an 18-year-old in Monroeville, Alabama. Along the journey, Mr. Stevenson highlights the injustice of a broken prison system, finds a new sense of purpose within himself, and learns the truth of mercy and redemption from the men and women he encounters and defends along the way. At the end, although Mr. Stevenson states that the fight for civil rights and criminal justice continues, readers experience a sense of relief knowing that, through Mr. Stevenson’s efforts, Walter McMillian’s fate is forever changed, as is the heart and mind of Mr. Stevenson himself. Following Mr. Stevenson's keynote speech, the evening will conclude with a Q&A session and book signing. The event is free and open to the public, so please join us for this wonderful opportunity!
