Time: 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Location: Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art

Mildred and Richard Loving knew it was technically illegal for them to live as a married couple in Virginia because she was of African American and Native American descent and he was white. But they never expected to be woken up in their bedroom and arrested one night in 1958. The Loving Story brings to life the Lovings’ marriage and the legal battle that followed through little known filmed interviews and photographs shot for Life magazine.

Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities that uses the power of documentary films to encourage community discussion of America’s civil rights history. NEH has partnered with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to develop programming. JCSM is one of 473 institutions across the United States taking part in this dialogue.

The film is also presented as a part of Auburn University’s celebration of 50 years of integration. Our partners are Auburn University Libraries, Auburn University Office for Access and Community Initiatives, and Auburn University Multicultural Center.

Seating is limited. Advanced registration is encouraged via the Eventbrite app on the museum’s programs page.
