What are we doing to "Become" the Beloved Community? Day 1: Commemorating the 51st Anniversary of the Assassination of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Featured speakers: Megan Young, Olivia Nichols and Ashley Brown. Megan Young, Director of Strategy & Special Projects for the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, will share the history of Alabama’s only federally recognized Tribe. She will also be discussing what it means to be Alabama Natives, Alabama Neighbors, and how the Poarch community has embraced opportunities to give back.

Olivia Nichols and Ashley Brown, founders of the Lee County Remembrance Project, will present their research on the four lynchings that occurred here in Lee County, Alabama. Using the Equal Justice Initiative’s truth and reconciliation model, Brown and Nichols will engage the audience/community with discussions on each case, and opportunities to reconcile and overcome the persistent legacy of lynching through historical markers and advocacy. The Lee County Remembrance Project is a community driven initiative working to reconcile the racial terror, violence, and trauma that occurred in Lee County.

Free and open to the public. For more information, contact Joan Harrell at jrh0098@auburn.edu.
