Christina Snyder “Andrew Jackson's Indian Son: Muscogee Creeks and Americans in the Removal Era” TUESDAY, Nov. 13, 2018 @ 4:00 PM Auburn Conference Center Auditorium Auburn, Alabama and the land surrounding it were occupied for thousands of years by the Creek Indians and their ancestors. The Treaty of Cusseta, signed by the Creeks in 1832, obliged them to yield their claims to all land east of the Mississippi, and they were forced to leave. In 1836, white settlers began moving into the Auburn area. A few years later, the city of Auburn was incorporated. Hence, the forced Creek Removal opened the way for the white settlement of Auburn. In consequence, these events are critically important for Auburn’s history. We are most fortunate to have one of the leading scholars of these events visit Auburn to provide a detailed account of the history and legacies of Indian Removal. Christina Snyder is McCabe Greer Professor of History at Penn State University. Her books, Great Crossings: Indians, Settlers, and Slaves in the Age Jackson and Slavery in Indian Country: The Changing Face of Captivity in Early America, have received numerous awards. The most recent is the 2018 Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians. She has also received the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians Book Prize, the James Broussard Prize, and the James C. Ewers Prize. This event is free and open to the public. Because of construction in the hotel parking area, those who arrive at the Conference Center by car will need to pay a $5 valet parking fee.
