Location: Pebble Hill

The public is invited to “’Measuring Up to the Standards of Democracy’: The Patriotic Work of Tuskegee's Robert Russa Moton and Emmett Jay Scott during The Great War,” a talk by Dr. Derryn Moten at the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts & Humanities at Pebble Hill.

Dr. Moten’s talk will examine the volunteer civilian roles of Tuskegee Institute’s Dr. Robert Russa Moton and Dr. Emmett Scott in World War I. Alabama Governor Charles Henderson appointed Dr. Moton as the head of the Negro Committee for the State Council of Defense. Secretary of War Newton Baker requested Dr. Scott as his Special Assistant for Negro troops. Moton and Scott performed their duties before packed integrated and segregated audiences across the United States.

Dr. Derryn Moten is professor and chair of the Department of History and Political Science at Alabama State University.

Dr. Moten’s talk is part of a Draughon Center series commemorating the 100th anniversary of United States’ participation in the World War I and is made possible with funding the Alabama Humanities Foundation, state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Maiben Beard at 334-844-4903 or maiben@auburn.edu
