A special discussion will take place on Thursday, April 13, at 3:30 p.m., about the racial violence and black mental health issues in Jordan Peele’s film, “Get Out.” The film features a young African-American man who visits his Caucasian girlfriend’s mysterious
family estate – a place where many of its residents, who are African-American, have gone missing.
Three assistant professors from different colleges on campus (including the College of Liberal Arts) will lead a roundtable discussion in the RBD Library (Caroline Marshall Draughon Auditorium) on the recent film. Dr. Jessica Fripp, Dr. Julia Charles, and Dr. Adrienne Duke will engage with the themes of the film, while paying particular attention to the fields of mental health, African American studies, and gender and sexuality studies. They will also discuss the absence of Black women in the film and what that suggests about racial and gender politics in 2017. This is a free event. |
