The Daniel F. Breeden Eminent Scholar Chair,
Dr. Mark Hersey will discuss George Washington Carver and the Hidden Histories of Conservation
and Science in the African American Community. Few figures in American history are as familiar as George Washington Carver, and even
fewer are as misunderstood. A careful look at the work and career of the Tuskegee scientist reveals a more complicated man than the familiar two-dimensional caricature. It also uncovers a long-neglected history of African American environmental thought and
highlights the ways in which black scientists and inventors have often been written out of conventional narratives of the history of American science and technology. |
