Horseshoe Bend National Military Park will host its annual symposium on Saturday, August 6 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Pebble Hill.

In recognition of the National Park Service’s Centennial, the presentations will focus on sites and history related to the agency’s mission to preserve and protect. One of the National Park Service’s centennial goals is to encourage people to explore all parks, museums and other places that preserve the nation’s natural, cultural and historical heritage.

Speakers for the symposium will present on topics related to Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, American Indian settlements, and historic preservation. Dr. Kathryn Braund will present on the Creek towns of Nuyaka and Okfuskee; Mike Bunn will expound on Creek War battlefields in Alabama; Dr. Keith Hebert’s presentation will look at the National Historic Preservation Act and what it has accomplished in 50 years of existence; and Justin Weiss will help to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the creation of Horseshoe Bend National Military Park.

The symposium is sponsored by Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities, the Alabama Historical Commission and the Friends of Horseshoe Bend National Military Park.
