Park Ranger for Interpretation at Horseshoe Bend National Military Park and Auburn graduate Heather Tassin will take participants back to March 27, 1814 by regaling the audience with the story of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Ms. Tassin will discuss how Major General Andrew Jackson ‘s army attacked Chief Menawa’s Red Stick Creek warriors fortified in a horseshoe shaped bend of the Tallapoosa River. The battle ended the Creek War, created a national hero of Andrew Jackson, and resulted in a land cession of 23,000,000 acres to the United States; thus helping create present day Alabama.
