Views on ‘Blackness’: An Architectural Discourse
Based on research her recent book, Space Unveiled: Invisible Cultures in the Design Studio, Dr. Carla Jackson Bell, Director of Multicultural Affairs and a faculty member in the
College of Architecture-Design and Construction, will discuss why it is pivotal for students to understand the centrality of culture, gender and space in order to create culturally responsive design interventions. Drawing on critical discourse theory and her
substantial experience in introducing controversial issues in modern architecture, design and construction education, Dr. Bell will explore how professors can respond when students ask uncomfortable questions about race, gender, and cultural issues.
