Please join us for “Civic Professionalism and Mass Communication: Practitioner Perspectives” with CLA Engaged Scholar Brigitta Brunner, Professor, School of Communication and Journalism.

This presentation explores mass communication’s fit with the concept of civic professionalism as a means of engagement and public information communication.  Civic professionalism is a framework that incorporates the values of education with civic inquiry, reflection, and practical work. Ten mass communication practitioners were interviewed to gather their thoughts on civic professionalism and mass communication.  Based on these interviews, the researcher argues that civic professionalism may be a practical way for practitioners to engage with community and explain the field’s contributions to society.  Thus, via civic professionalism, practitioners can socially reconstruct communication as public interest communication for the common good, which would bring mass communication back to its roots and foundations.
