“The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Changed the Constitution” TUESDAY, Oct. 31, 2017 @ 4:00 PM Langdon Hall The Reconstruction Period following the American Civil War and lasted from 1867 to 1877. It is
as tumultuous a period as any in American life. Though short lived, its consequences continue to shape American life to the present day. It was deeply unpopular among white Southerners but joyously welcomed by recently freed slaves because it offered them the
prospect of full participation in civil society and a voice in affairs of state. During this period Blacks were elected to political office. Also, colleges, schools and churches were founded by and for them. With the end of Reconstruction, their ability to
participate in political and civic life was greatly restricted. Professor Eric Foner is among the most distinguished historians of this era, and we are most fortunate he will visit us to discuss it. Recently retired, Professor Foner was DeWitt Clinton Professor
of History at Columbia University. Author of many books, the most noted include Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men: The Ideology of the Republican Party Before the Civil War\; Nothing But Freedom: Emancipation and Its Legacy and Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished
Revolution, 1863-1877. In addition, he received Bancroft and Pulitzer Prizes in the same year and received many other awards. He has served as president of 2 major history societies. He has also published a free online course, “The Civil War and Reconstruction.”
His writings have been widely reviewed and widely lauded. For more information, see: http://ericfoner.com/
