November 12, 2013
Time: 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Ridgecrest Housing Community meeting room, 931 Booker Street in Auburn

The Auburn University Community and Civic Engagement Club in the College of Liberal Arts and the Auburn Public Housing Authority will hold a public celebration featuring the recent accomplishments of several local children on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Ridgecrest Housing Community meeting room at 931 Booker Street in Auburn (located off North Donahue).
For the past several weeks, youth ages 6-12 from the Ridgecrest Community have worked with Auburn University students through “Be You: A Citizen Photography Project” to express themselves through photography, drawing and creative writing.
Students participating in the program discussed what makes each of them unique and the qualities of a good leader, and were asked to delve deeper into issues and problems they care about through photography projects.
“From bullying to school hours, to block parties, the children were really getting at the heart of many community issues,” said Community and Civic Engagement Club President Mary Afton Day.
Day coordinated the program under the guidance of Charlotte Mattox, Family Self-Sufficiency Coordinator for Auburn Public Housing.
“The goal of the program was to develop basic leadership skills and instill pride in their community,” says CCE Club President Mary Afton Day. “We have been honored to work with such talented and fun young people.”
The Nov. 12 celebration will include participant testimonies, a brief video, and presentation of certificates.  Refreshments will be served. To read blog entries from each of the sessions, visit www.auclastudentengagement.com.  For more information, contact Mary Afton Day at mzd0014@auburn.edu.
