Appalachian Community Developer to Lead Workshop on Citizen-Led Change

Marie Cirillo, former director of the Clearfork Community Institute in Eagan, Tenn., will lead a workshop on rural community development in the age of ecological destruction from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 14th, in 310 Tichenor Hall.

Cirillo, originally from Brooklyn, New York, moved to the Clearfork Valley of Tennessee in 1967, which is comprised of numerous unincorporated coal camp communities that suffered from the outmigration of Appalachian residents following the implementation of surface mining. For nearly 40 years, Cirillo has organized residents on local issues, including the development of a health clinic, water utility, community development, and one of the first community land trusts in the nation. Her story is one of several featured in the book Mountain Sisters: From Convent to Community in Appalachia, and she has won numerous awards for her life of service.

There is no cost to attend the workshop, and dinner will be provided. Participants must reserve a space with Gabrielle Lamplugh at gll0004@auburn.edu by Tuesday, November 12. The event is sponsored by the Community and Civic Engagement Initiative in the College of Liberal Arts with support from the Auburn University Special Lectures Fund.
