Carol Mickett and Robert Stackhouse have created art collaboratively for more than a decade, producing large-scale sculpture, paintings, drawings and prints. As the artist couple explains, working
in partnership forces them to operate “beyond their comfort zones to do work that neither of them would attempt individually.” This fruitful collaboration, combining backgrounds in philosophy, theater, poetry and the visual arts, has resulted in numerous exhibitions
and commissions including a permanent installation in 2010 at the Hunter Museum of American Art entitled Place in the Woods.
Mickett’s résumé includes extensive experience in radio and television, numerous publications, awards, and corporate work; Stackhouse achieved international renown for his art in a career that
dates back to the late 1960s. His work can be found in many museum and corporate collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; Australian National Gallery, Canberra; Citicorp, New York; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; Museum of Modern Art, New York;
Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. Together, they have exhibited and lectured across the United States and their art is represented in collections such as the Chazen Museum of Art, Indianapolis Art Center, the City
of Takamatsu, Japan, among others. We are fortunate to have Mickett and Stackhouse serve as jurors for JCSM’s inaugural outdoor sculpture exhibition, Out of the Box.
Breath of Identity, organized for JCSM, addresses the concept of artistic collaboration and the nature of a melded identity that is inherent in their work. Featuring a series of large paintings
with related drawings, prototypes and engineering studies for recent sculpture projects, and sequential photographs of the Hunter Museum installation, the exhibition offers insight into Mickett and Stackhouse’s shared creative process.
